SKILL ENHANCEMENT COURSE- Pesticide Chemistry

Theory: 30 lectures

General Introduction to Pesticides (natural and synthetic), benefits and adverse effects, changing concepts of pesticides, structure activity relationship, synthesis and technical manufacture and uses of representative pesticides in the following classes:

1. Organochlorides (DDT, Gammexene,)
2. Oragnophophates (Malathion, Parathion)
3. Carbamates (Carbofuran and carbaryl)
4. Quinones (Chloranil)
5. Anilides (alachlor and Butachlor).

Practical:

To calculate acidity/alkalinity in given sample of pesticide formulations as per BIS specifications.
Preparation of Simple Organophophates, phosphonates and thiophosphate.

Reference Books:

Cremlyn, R. Pesticides, Preparation and Modes of Action, John Wiley & Sons, New York, 1978.
